There is an almost 200-year-old custom associated with this day, first-graders are given a Schultuete (or school bag). Whether in 1933 (photo left) or right after the Second World War (1946, photo right), sweets have always been in the bag. No matter how bad the times were, parents often gave out their last savings for this. Of course, one could also exaggerate, as Erich Kaestner reported, who had been enrolled in 1905: his school bag was so big and so heavily filled that he stumbled with the huge thing and the sweets landed in the street.Photo: TeutopressImage number: 00093888First graders from 1933 (left) and 1946 (right)The serious side of life begins for more than 900,000 children in August / September 2002: First day at school in Germany.
