In der frühen Neuzeit von 1532 bis 1652 diente der Platz als Versammlungstsätte des Landtags (Stände) des Fürstentums Lüneburg. Während der NS-Herrschaft wurde der Platz in seiner heutigen Form umgestaltet. Die Nationalsozialisten machten ihn zu einer germanischen Kultstätte. Der Platz sollte als Versammlungsstätte des Bauerntums dienen.
