A mass of people protested against the French occupation policy, when French soldiers, shortly after this photo was taken, opened fire on the demonstrators and killed several of them. This Holy Saturday tragedy went down in history as the Essener Blutbad (Essen massacre). On the left the main administrative building of Krupp AG.
