Soldiers at a wagon under which the ice has broken, the horses of which have died in an ice hole. At the beginning of February 1945, refugees trapped in the cauldron of East Prussia attempt to flee over the ice of the Fresh Bay to the Vistula Spit in order to reach along the Baltic Sea coast of Gdansk. The picture was taken by Theodor Vonolfen, a soldier of a Luftwaffe unit, deployed there at that time.
