Bodies of Soviet soldiers lie on an unpaved road. In the background there is a tank destroyed by a German anti-tank gun. During the encirclement battle of Kholm the "Kampfgruppe Scherer" successfully defended the town for 105 days. (PK photo taken by the war correspondent Richard Muck who flew into the pocket at the beginning of March).
