In Cholm, German Wehrmacht soldiers are preparing Stielhandgranate 39 ("stick hand grenade") for the defence of the town. During the encirclement battle of Kholm the "Kampfgruppe Scherer" successfully defended the town for 105 days. (A photo of the Propaganda Company (PK) by war correspondent Richard Muck, who flew into the pocket at the beginning of March).
