This photo shows from left: the CSU chairman Franz-Josef Strauss and next to him the CDU chairman Helmut Kohl, who announce the faction separation of CDU and CSU at a joint press conference. Reason for the faction separation was the poor performance and electoral defeat of Helmut Schmidt of the CSU / CDU parliamentary group. Therefore the CSU-chairman Franz-Josef Strauss decided the splitting off of the CSU from the common CDU / CSU parliamentary group.
