In February 1945, the Silesian capital Breslau was surrounded by Russian troops and was defended by "Battle Commander" (Kampfkommandant) Karl Hanke until the war ended with heavy losses. German soldiers beat loopholes in the ground floor walls in the residential area of Brealau
