28 years after the closure of the inner German border, the GDR opened its border on November 9, 1989 to Berlin (West) and the rest of the Federal territory. By November 12, more than one million people from East Berlin flocked to Berlin (West) on foot or by car across the existing sector crossings. Here they are cheered by the West Berlin population.
