Madrid in ruins, flight and destruction - The spanish civil war tells the story of dictator Francisco Franco’s rise. The fighting began with the revolts of the garrissons against the democratically elected spanish government in Spanish Morocco in 1936. Within a few days, the battles extended to mainland Spain but the seizure of power by the rebels failed. Instead, things were heading for a stalemate that finally ended in a military conflict.
Nazi Germany and Italy were loyal to Franco’s party, the popular front government was supported by the Soviet Union. The destruction oft he city Guernica by the air force of Legion Condor is still a symbol for the destructive aerial war. After the final victory in 1939, Franco established a system of government that existed until his death.
